Meet the team

Ian Barnes – Director

Ian is the lead arboricultural consultant and trainer for Tree Diagnostics, a department of Barnes Associates Ltd, and specialises in tree stability testing and decay detection using advanced testing equipment. Ian is an Arboricultural Association Registered Consultant. He is proudly ‘from the tools, having spent many years as a lead climber and ran a successful contracting business until 2005.The consultancy practice is based in North Yorkshire and has a very capable team of arboricultural consultants and surveyors, enabling the practice to deliver advanced assessments throughout the UK, Ian is the UK trainer for Fakopp. The practice also provides BS5837, general health, safety and risk assessment tree surveys, Mortgage, and subsidence reports through to Tree radar (Root mapping), along with large tree population surveys to town-wide scale.

Sue Barnes  – Director 


FDSc.Arb, NDHt/Arb

Sue is the lead landscape consultant at the practice and her career to date has involved a variety of areas including, landscape management, tree care, detailed planting schemes, including woodland design & management, along with detailed health and safety appraisals, tree inventories / population surveys. She also provides specifications and management plans and deals with landscape & tree planning conditions. She is trained in tree related subsidence. 

She has worked in the Horticultural and Arboricultural Industry since 1987. Firstly, as a horticulturalist in the public and private sector, then a head gardener. She then ran in partnership a Landscape and Arboricultural contracting business for 15 years. She started developing the practice in 1993, working throughout England for clients in both the public and private sector. She is a trained user of ‘Acoustic’ and electronic Tomography, along with being an assistant in other areas of advanced assessments using Fakopp equipment for tree diagnostics.

Matt Metcalfe – Lead Surveyor/Consultant/ UAS pilot 


Matt has worked in the Arboricultural Industry since 2000, Firstly, as a climbing arborist. In 2009 Matt started teaching Arboriculture and became a City and Guilds NPTC assessor. In 2013 he became a course manager and internal verifier for the level 2 apprenticeships, then became a senior course manager (arboriculture). He has a level 5 certificate in education. In 2018 he became a fulltime consulting arborist with Barnes Associates, he undertakes advanced tree assessment training, undertakes BS5837 tree surveys, Arboricultural safety audits and tree risk assessments using various systems including valid and threats. He undertakes GPR (Tree Radar) scans along with advanced assessments using tomography, dynamic tree testing and static tree pulls. In 2021 he undertook the A2CoC and GVC Drone licences and carries out drone surveys of trees, including 2D and 3D mapping of sites. Mat also completed IOSH Managing safety in the workplace and is our health and safety advisor.  

Mr Trevor Grigg – Senior Consulting Arborist

Since 2004, Trevor has been involved in arboriculture firstly as a climbing arborist, then as an Arboricultural Officer for a local authority. He has gained experience of working with a wide range of clients, from residential tree owners to schools, Parish Councils and Highways departments providing a variety of tasks and requests such as risk assessments, management plans and replanting schemes. Trevor has Lantra professional Tree inspector (PTI) training and is a licensed user of QTRA. Trevor joined Barnes Associates in 2021 and undertakes tree health and safety assessments, and advanced tree assessments using tomography and static and dynamic tree testing equipment. He undertakes BS5837 tree surveys and is widening his experience in further investigations of trees using the specialist equipment available.

Mr John Evans  Consulting Arborist

Technical member of the Arboricultural Association,

Forestry and Arboriculture Level 3

For the past six years, John has been a climbing arborist, firstly working freelance for utility and domestic clients, then joining a local authority as a climbing arborist. Whilst working for the council, he continued his professional development and working with the Tree Officer. He has a Forestry and Arboriculture Level 3 and is a technical member of the arboricultural association. John joined barnes associates in 2021 and undertakes small- and large-scale tree risk assessments, BS5837 surveys, and is developing his knowledge in the use of advanced tree surveying equipment such as tomography scans and tree stability both static and dynamic along with GPR (Tree radar). He is developing his skills in CAD and drone use.

Mr Ben Stoker  – Project Coordinator/ Arb Surveyor

Ben started with Barnes associates as a student placement whilst studying for his level 3 in arboriculture and during his foundation degree in Arboriculture. With a background originally in hospitality his role of project coordinator has developed over the years, supporting clients and helping things run smoothly. He provides technical support to the arboricultural surveyors, and he assists in the further investigation works such as tomography and static and dynamic testing of trees. He undertakes tree risk assessments and BS5837 surveys and is developing his skills in CAD and drone use.
